Walter Lewis Obituary

Mr. Walter “Tony” Earl Lewis, Jr. was born September 19, 1966 to Mr. Walter Earl Lewis, Sr. and Mrs. Barbara J. Lewis.

He accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Shady Grove Baptist Church under Rev. L. J. Rogers.

Tony was educated in the Birmingham City School System and attended F. D. McArthur Elementary School.  He was known as “Brick” by his childhood friends.  He attended Phillips High School and played drums in the marching band.  He graduated in 1984 and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Air Force.  His specialties were brick masonry and cement finishing.

Tony began playing football as a child at the A.G. Gaston Boys Club and his love for sports carried on into his adult life.  He was a well-known ticket agent for numerous sporting events all over the country.  He was also very well-known and loved by many for his outgoing personality and great sense of humor!  Tony did not meet any strangers.  He had a kind heart, and was a motivator and mentor for many.  He often expressed the great love he had for his family.

He was the proud head coach of Hemphill girls’ basketball team, The Lady Hawks.  He led them to win the championship in February of this year!
Tony had a heart for children and the elderly.  He worked for the Birmingham Board of Education for over 20 years and was assigned to several schools including Ramsey High School.  His final promotion landed him at Hemphill Elementary School where he served as Head Custodian and was loved and respected by the staff and students alike.
Tony was preceded in death by his brothers, Samson Lawson, Jr. and Frederick Lee Lawson.

He leaves to cherish his memories his devoted parents: Ms. Barbara Lewis and Mr. Walter Earl Lewis, Sr.; one brother: Mr. Dywane E. Lawson; one sister: Mrs. Stephanie Lewis-Woods (Rodrequis); one son: Mr. Tremaine Antonio Lewis (Monique); four grandchildren: Kyra, Kaci, Tremaine, Jr. and Tru; a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
