Joseph Raymond August, Jr., affectionately known as “Lil Joe” transitioned on February 22, 2018, at 11:59 p.m.
He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, to Joseph Raymond August, Sr. and Sandra Jones August on December 20, 1971. Joe was the husband of Tiffany Vappie August who was his lifeline for many, many years and the father of Sonia Sarah August. He was the stepson of Charles Anthony Thibodeaux. He was the brother of Angel Sonia August, Anthony Charles Thibodeaux (Eboni), Christopher August, Juanita Dorsey Thibodeaux and Brenda Dorsey.
He was preceded in death by maternal grandparents: Albert Edwards, Jr. and Sonia Simon Edwards; paternal grandparents: Edward Nicholas, Jr. and Leola August Nicholas; step-grand parents: Freddie and Ruth Thibodeaux. He is survived by a host of uncles, aunts, nieces, nephews, cousins, and a brotherly-friend Dorean Huntington.
Joseph attended John F. Kennedy Senior High. He worked as a maintenance technician for many years with Volunteers of America (VOA). He later formed and co-owned Raymond’s HVAC & Electrical Service Company in New Orleans, Louisiana, until his health began to decline. Joseph was a kidney dialysis patient for 20 years.
After 18 years of marriage, he finally reached his most important desire in life and fathered his precious daughter, Sonia Sarah August. Joe’s love for Sonia cannot be measured or mimicked. She was his personal cheerleader and he was her HERO.
He later moved to Hammond, Louisiana, at the age of 28, and in 2014, relocated to Birmingham, Alabama, where he lived in the comfort and care of his mother and siblings until his transition.
Joseph August, Jr. was personable, loving, and had enjoyed lasting relationships with his family, friends, and particularly with his famous Saints Football Team. Joe’s relationship with his mother was one of great love, appreciation and admiration. He had a gift of making his each aunts feel like she was that one special auntie, and he loved and revered his uncles.
Lil Joe came into this world fighting to hold onto life and departed this realm with dignity and peace with his family and maker.
