Joe Clay, Sr. Obituary

Mr. Joe Clay, Sr. was born August 12, 1929, to the late Mr. Square and Mrs. Rosie Jones Clay of Noxubee County, Mississippi. Mr. Clay was raised and educated in the Noxubee County School System.

Mr. Clay moved to Birmingham in 1950, an apprentice of various trades. He enjoyed working as a skillful Plasterer, Brick Mason and Cement Finisher. The demand for his skills afforded him the opportunity to travel all over the South. He worked well into his eighties and was second to none at his craft. He also gladly and willfully shared his knowledge with others.

He accepted Christ at an early age. After moving to Birmingham, he later joined the Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church of Zion City, under the leadership of Pastor Robert C. Bearden, III. Mr. clay has remained a faithful and dedicated member of the church. He will truly be missed.

He leaves to cherish his memory a loving wife: Elnora Clay; seven sons: Joe Clay, Jr. (Ada), Bobby Lee Clay, the late Rev. Leon Clay (Nell), Jeff Clay (Sherry), James Tate (Tammy), Andre Tate, Thaddius Tate, Jody Clay (Janie), of Birmingham, Alabama; one daughter: Christine Bell of Hempstead, New York; two brothers: Willie Clay of Rochester, New York, and Charlie Clay of Columbus, Mississippi; one sister: Addie Clay of Rochester, New York; fifteen grandchildren and a host of great-grands, nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
