Mr. Eugene Smitherman Jr. was born in Fairfield, Alabama, at T.C.I. Hospital to the late Eugene and Virginia Smitherman on May 17, 1945.
He attended Lincoln Elementary School and graduated from Parker High School. He was united in Holy Matrimony to the late Sophia Brown. He was employed by the Jefferson County School System.
Eugene, with his brother by his side, confessed Christ as his Lord and Savior. “Popcorn”, as he was so affectionately called, loved his family and friends. If he could help in any way he did and it was from the kindness of his heart. He was firm, but loving and all those who spent time with him felt better off for doing so. His journey of life ended on Saturday, December 29, 2018, but his memories will live on in the hearts of those who loved him.
He was preceded in death by his wife, father, mother, stepfather, four brothers, and one sister.
He leaves to cherish his memories four sons: Eugene Smitherman of Chicago, IL; Marvin Smitherman of Birmingham, AL; Leonard Smitherman of Birmingham, AL; and Keith Brown of Chicago, IL. Seven brothers, three sisters, twelve grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; caregiver Marcellus (“Skeet”) Boykins (nephew); two childhood friends since elementary school: William (Billy) McCain and James Carter and a host of relatives and friends.
