Our cherished mother, Ella Mae Moton was a praying spiritual warrior. She entered this world on August 13, 1927. And she left this world on April 19, 2019, at the Saint Francis Memorial Hospital in Hartford, Connecticut. Our blessed mother was born in Perry County, Alabama and raised by her mother Mary Jane Turner Moton and her step-father, Hopewell Moton in Selma, Alabama. She had one brother Joseph Moton (deceased) of Birmingham, Alabama and one sister, Willie Deloris Moton (deceased) of Birmingham, Alabama.
In Selma, she attended the family church, Ebenezer Baptist Church and in later life participated at the Shiloh Christian Church in Hartford Connecticut. Ella Mae Moton is a mother that reminds you of the Lord. Her every answer to any questions begins with God. She raised her six children with this same spirit. For this, we love her and has tried to emulate this spirit in our lives.
As children, we remember her protecting us from the elements of the streets but enthusiastically pushing us out the door to join any stand for the civil rights struggle in Selma in the 1960s. Our mother gave birth to six children creating the Moton clan, who later become Civil Rights Foot-soldiers. We dedicate this tribute to our mother whom we love dearly. We are so very grateful the God Almighty gave us this beautiful, kind and dedicated mother who is the pride of our lives. The most extraordinary thing about our mother is the fact that from the beginning of our lives, she always reminded us of the importance of worshipping God Almighty. Over the years whenever we visited or called her, she inspired us to love the Creator first. Historically, whenever she answered the telephone, she would say, “Praise the Lord” or “Blessed and glad to be in the land of the living.”
The Moton clan of six children are Irvin Glen Moton (deceased) who had no children. Leroy Jerome Moton who has one child, Leroy Moton, Jr. (Connecticut). Khadijah Ghafur (Deanna Moton) who has one son Faruq A. Baqi (South Carolina). Clifford Ray Moton who has one son Todd Moton (Connecticut). Reginald Moton (Ricky) who has three children Chad, Jasmine, and Quarinesha (Connecticut). Joe Moton and wife, Angela who has one son Isaac Moton (Georgia). She also leaves her special nephews and nieces; Elder Frederick (Henrietta) Moton (Birmingham), Faye Moton Merchant (Birmingham), Vickie Moton Webster (Birmingham), Carole Moton, and many other special nieces, nephews, family members and friends.
Thank you, mother, for your love. We thank God Almighty for giving us you as our mother.
