Doris Thomas Rhodes (age 71) departed this life April 13, 2019 at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan.
Her parents were the late Ivory Frank Thomas and Fannie Winters. Doris was a beloved mother, sister, aunt, and friend. She loved to laugh and share stories of her adventures with childhood friends growing up in the Russell Heights community. Doris inherited a love for cooking from her late mother Fannie Thomas and enjoyed spending time with family. Her faith in God was devout and never hesitated to pray for and with others.
After graduating from Robert R. Moton High in 1965, Doris was excited to relocate to Detroit where she enjoyed a long career in the healthcare field earning certificates in nursing, physical therapy aide, and physical therapy training. After retirement she moved back to Leeds for a short stint while continuing to work in home healthcare while reconnecting with family and childhood friends. She also became an avid reader, joining several book clubs. She appreciated stories that encompassed deep drama, excitement, and autobiographies. Her favorite author was black fiction novelist Mary Monroe and some of her top autobiographies were Miles Davis, Malcolm X, and most recently, Della Reese.
Doris was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Fannie Thomas and four brothers Eddie D. Blocker, Frank Thomas Jr., Roger L. Thomas and Reverend Jerry L. Thomas Sr.
She is survived by her three children (Terrell L. Rhodes (Diana) St. Albans, NY., Angela Rhodes Detroit, MI., Dameon L. Gabriel (Alecia) Detroit, MI), two brothers (Richard Winters Richmond, VA and James E. Thomas (Doris) Moody, AL), sister (Shirley T. Rayford Porter Ranch, CA), as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
